WellSleep (Wellington New Zealand) has a vacancy for a Clinical Sleep Physiologist.  This position is suitable for a trainee. 

WellSleep is a busy tertiary level sleep unit providing both home and laboratory diagnostic tests, treatment initiation and undertaking research in sleep medicine. We are looking for someone who has excellent physiology knowledge, great people skills and who is keen to build a career in sleep physiology. 

As well as completion of year 2 MTEC sleep papers, the successful applicant will receive full training and ongoing professional development opportunities.

The Role
The role consists of a service to outpatients and inpatients by providing both neurology and sleep related tests.

Diagnostic investigations include: 

  • Electroencephalopgraphy
  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Evoked potentials
  • Ambulatory EEG
  • Polysomnography
  • CPAP and bilevel titration and fitting.


It is highly desirable that you have relevant neurophysiological technical qualifications and recent experience in both sleep and neurophysiology. IN addition to performing neurological testing you will also monitor patients on CPAP/ Bilevel treatment.

It is essential that you have a demonstrated ability and interest in working with medical technology. There is expected to be some cross cover of other senior technician/scientist roles to ensure continuity of service.

You would also need to have proven computer and keyboard skills.

This is a full-time position, working 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday between 8am to 4.30pm. There is a requirement for assistance with the sleep set up evening roster once or twice a month for 3-4 hours.

VIC - Full-Time Scientific Manager

Are you looking to broaden your clinical leadership and management experience?

Western Health (Melbourne), is recruiting a permanent full time position for a suitably qualified Scientific Manager.

This exciting Grade 4 role is responsible for the management of the Sleep Disorders Unit, Respiratory Function Laboratories, Cardiopulmonary Exercise Assessment Service and Neurophysiology Laboratories across Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals. The role also oversees the Stroke Clinical Trial team.

We provide diagnostic services for more than 5,000 Western Health patients every year and actively participate in quality improvement and research initiatives. 

Our laboratories are equipped with modern technologies that have all undergone recent equipment upgrades or replacement. These are all maintained by comprehensive service agreements with vendors. Both the Respiratory and Sleep laboratories are accredited with TSANZ and ASA/NATA.

The role is well supported by an enthusiastic team of scientists, with a Grade 3 Clinical Lead in each specialty and combined scientific workforce of approximately 18.5EFT.

The Sleep Disorders Centre (SDC), a section of the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, is the only public sleep disorders centre within the Metro South Health Service. The SDC provides a comprehensive adult sleep disorders service to diagnose, treat and follow-up patients with respiratory-related and nonrespiratory-related sleep disorders. Since the department includes a dedicated Respiratory High Dependency Unit, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is a prominent feature in the service requirements of the SDC. The SDC is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) according to the Australasian Sleep Association’s Standards for Sleep Services 2016. It was the third service in Australia to achieve this accreditation.

Day to day management of the clinical teams is undertaken by the Advanced Sleep Scientists under the direction of the Scientific Director of the SDC. The SDC has professional and academic links with a number of tertiary institutions, including the supervision of students undertaking professional placements for Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology and Sunshine Coast University.

The Role

The Sleep Disorders Centre are looking for an Advanced Clinical Measurements (Sleep Scientist) to join them. Located at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the successful applicant will provide independent, high level specialised clinical services and/or general clinical services of a complex and critical nature with significant scope.

This position is required to provide a specialist level of clinical sleep services to patients within the Metro South Health Service in accordance with prescribed professional guidelines and ethical standards.

They will:

  • Acts as the clinical reference point for other clinicians at service level.
  • Develop, monitor and evaluate competency standards for clinical area/s of expertise.
  • Contribute to review of workloads within team and across teams, for area of clinical expertise.
  • Proactively respond as a leader in day to day clinical matters as they arise.

The role:

This position is for a senior sleep scientist to assist the current RCH Sleep Chief Scientist with staging and scoring of paediatric sleep studies. These studies will include complex ventilation (CPAP, BIPAP and tracheostomy ventilated) as well as neonatal sleep studies. Additional roles will include provision of technical supervision to sleep unit staff, a contribution to the development of sleep unit procedure manuals, and management of the sleep lab equipment, including all aspects of software and hardware (Compumedics, PSG4 and Nexus). Occasional after hours on-call cover for leave or setup shifts may be required. This is an ongoing part time position of 0.2 FTE (7.6hours per week).

Key duties of the role will include:

Participate in the analysis and interpretation of sleep studies. The post holder will be expected to follow agreed laboratory protocols and to produce and to analyse respiratory sleep studies, and written technical sleep study report.

Actively participate in the scientific activities and research of the Department as directed by the Department Manager

Sleep Unit Laboratory management roles/ as directed by the medical director

Participate in the evaluation and ongoing development of technical procedures and policy

Supervision, training of new team members & provision of technical supervision of Sleep Unit Staff

Train staff members to protocols procedures & education

Participate in any other projects allocated by the Department head or direct supervisor.

General administrative housekeeping, including maintenance of filing systems and general departmental filing.

Attend, participate in and successfully complete training provided by the hospital, as directed by senior staff.

To be considered for the role it is essential that you have:

Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or Bachelor of Science or equivalent where ‘equivalent’ includes a degree awarded by an overseas tertiary institution which is recognised by the National Office of Overseas skills is mandatory.

Previous significant experience working in a paediatric sleep unit with demonstrated experience in staging and scoring paediatric sleep studies, including neonatal studies, CPAP, Bilevel and invasive ventilation studies.

Also desirable:

Management experience desirable.

Research experience would also be of benefit but is not a requirement.

The Austin Sleep Laboratory is a centre for excellence. As part of a teaching hospital, this is a large clinical laboratory service performing a comprehensive range of diagnostic patient testing; and treatment implementation and optimisation. The laboratory plays a cornerstone role in the department and has links to the wider hospital service as well as having links to other clinical services and academic institutions. In particular, it provides services to the state-wide Victorian Respiratory Support Service for patients with respiratory failure and has a proud association with the Institute for Breathing and Sleep.

The Burnside Sleep Centre provides a clinical service in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders in adults. A fantastic opportunity has become available for a sleep technician to join our team of professionals. This position involves the set-up and monitoring of patients undergoing diagnostic and treatment sleep studies. 

The successful applicant must be prepared to work evenings (1900 – 2200) and occasional overnight shifts (1930 – 0730).  The centre operates 6 nights per week (Sunday to Friday) with various shifts on offer.  Previous experience from a diagnostic sleep centre will be highly regarded but is not essential, as training will be provided to the right applicant.  Availability to cover shifts at short notice would be an advantage.

  • Bachelor of Science of equivalent (Physiology, Applied Health, Health Sciences)
  • Excellent communication skills and be able to deal with patients in a professional and confident manner
  • Competent organisation and time management skills, including the ability to set priorities, plan, and organise own work
